The Physalis is a group of annual and perennial vine, mainly grown for their fruit & for decorative purposes, that grow to around 0.9m x 1m. From July to September the Physalis is in flower and luckily for the plant it is a hermaphrodite which can be pollinated by insects. In Europe, America & Asia they can be found growing wild. Believe it or not the Physalis belongs to the potato family!

Physalis spread by means of underground stems, and when grown in the garden can be grown as annuals. The Chinese Lantern variety look great in the garden during the late summer. The stems bearing the fruit are valued for cutting and bringing indoors during the autumn and winter months. They last quite a long time in the fruit bowl and are great for decorative purposes. If they are to be used for decoration, the stems bearing the fruit should be cut as soon as they have developed their full colouring.
