The Pitahaya is the Spanish name for the fruiting cactus vine that can grow in soil or on tree bark like the orchid and produces fruit. The Pitahaya is related to the epiphyllum which are called orchid cactus because of the large and impressive flowers they have. They flower at night and for one night only!
The Pitahaya has an ovoid shape, and a thick pink skin with excrescences and bulges that end with lime green spikes. Inside there's a great mass of thick translucent white flesh that contains small edible black seeds that can be scooped out in neat easy spoonfuls giving off a pleasant fruity smell.
The flavour is a little like a melon, with crunchy seeds.
